Today marks the eighteenth anniversary of my father’s passing. I was only seventeen when he succumbed to cancer and despite what many people say time does not heal all wounds.
There is not a day that goes by when I don’t think about him and, as an adult, I find myself longing to be able to talk to him and ask his advice on all of the grown up issues that I have to deal with.
As a mother, I now find myself understanding all of the difficulties he and my mother went through when I was a child and appreciating more the sacrifices that they made just to ensure that I was happy.
Although my father is no longer with us, I firmly believe that it is never too late to show your appreciation so I thought that it would be a great idea to write my dad a letter to commemorate the anniversary of his death.
Almost two decades have passed since you left us and it still feels like yesterday I watched you take your last breath. So much has happened since that day and each day I continue to try to live my life in a way that would make you proud.
From the beginning of my life you were my rock, my idol and a genuine example of what a good husband, father and man should be. You were not perfect and you never pretended to be and, as a parent, I admired and appreciated your honesty and your willingness to communicate freely about every and any thing. No topic, no matter how taboo or uncomfortable, was off limits.
From a young age you taught me the importance of having respect for myself and respect for others. You taught me to live my life with integrity, morals and a guiding conscience and to raise others up whenever they were down. You were never afraid to stand up for what you believed in and to speak up when injustices were being served.
You could never deny anyone who was in need and always trusted in the inherent goodness of people. To many people this character trait of yours did not always serve you well but, you never stopped trusting and never stopped giving.
You encouraged me to work hard for everything that I wanted to achieve in life and were always there to cheer me on. You were my biggest and often loudest supporter and never once did I doubt your pride in me.
Because of you daddy, I know what genuine love is and how to love in return. Your every thought and every action was done with our family in mind and there are no words that could truly express how lucky and grateful I am to have had you as my father.
Until we meet again you are forever in my heart.
